At 24 years old, Gomes is about to pick the club that will shape the peak years of his career. He smartly chose to move to France after a deal with Manchester United expired to successfully bring himself into the public eye. Now it’s time to capitalise on that.

West Ham United are interested in him, but a return to Man Utd is also rumoured. When it comes to making a decision for the good of his career, this decision should be a no-brainer: Graham Potter’s Hammers should take it every time.

United do not score well in any of these factors, so while a return to Old Trafford may be a romantic notion for the playmaker, it’s one that he should push aside.

Indeed, he doesn’t solve any problems the Red Devils are looking to solve. His strength is chance creation, and without a quality striker to profit, this is nullified. In any case, Ruben Amorim already has Bruno Fernandes fulfilling this job in the No.10 role. Although the London-born star can play wide, it’s not where he’s thrived in France.
