Liverpool have 'made contact' with top Chelsea target Liam Delap, according to a report.

The Ipswich Town sharpshooter has emerged as one of the Premier League's most in-demand commodities this season. Delap has scored 10 goals for the relegation battlers in his first top-flight season.

The former Man City prospect has fired himself into the spotlight with his impressive performances. With Ipswich looking increasingly likely to head straight back down to the Championship, many clubs sniff the opportunity for a bargain.

Even if the Tractor Boys had managed to stay up, Delap would have likely left because of the overwhelming interest in his services. With the situation pretty much hopeless now - Ipswich are nine points off safety - the 22-year-old is almost guaranteed to jump ship.

Liverpool enter Delap race

In recent weeks, Delap has primarily fielded interest from Man Utd and Chelsea. The latter, in particular, have been most persistently courting the striker.

Indeed, reliable sources believe that Chelsea are the favourites to sign Delap this summer. However, TEAMtalk now reports that Liverpool have also 'made contact' with the Ipswich star.

Liverpool are 'very keen' to bring in multiple forwards in the next window and Delap, who 'ticks all the boxes,' is viewed as a cheaper alternative compared to other targets such as Alexander Isak and Julian Alvarez.

Delap is expected to cost around €50 million this summer. Liverpool's interest is described as a potential threat to Chelsea considering that they are the champions-elect and will definitely play in the Champions League next term.

Meanwhile, the chances of Man Utd securing Delap are deemed to be slim due to their horrific sporting and financial situation. Man City are unlikely to try and re-sign Delap, although they will stand to benefit from his next move due to being owed 20 per cent of his transfer fee.
