Liverpool’s failure to secure their star players to a new contract could be compounded with more outgoings to follow, leaving the Premier League champions-elect already heading for a potential rebuild.

Arne Slot will already see one of his key figures leave this summer after Trent Alexander-Arnold this week agreed to join Real Madrid, while Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk may also depart for free when their contracts expire at the end of the season.

The nightmare scenario would see Liverpool need to replace arguably their three most important players in one window, all of whom will net the club no transfer revenue despite being worth hundreds of millions on the open market.

The need to replace the trio would require significant investment even before considering further additions such as an upgrade up front, leading to unwanted sales for even more high-value players to compensate.

With Ibrahima Konate entering the final 12 months of his deal and stalling on a new contract, Liverpool could be forced to sell the Frenchman to avoid losing another star on a free, leading to an even bigger restructure of Slot’s title-winning defence.

And interest is now emerging on yet another defender who Liverpool may be forced to reluctantly cash in on to bolster the budget available to Slot to replace his star players.

Liverpool heading for busy summer with transfer interest in defensive core

According to The Times, Newcastle are looking to revive their interest in Jarrell Quansah after seeing an approach for the defender rebuffed last summer.

However, while the Magpies are hoping a deal of around £30 million can be struck, The Athletic claim Liverpool are planning on keeping Quansah for next season and feel his valuation has only increased from the £50m Newcastle were open to paying last year.

As an academy graduate, Quansah’s sale would represent pure profit for Liverpool’s books but the 22-year-old has always been seen as a long-term fixture at Anfield despite a mixed season so far.

Having to replace Van Dijk, Konate, Alexander-Arnold AND Quansah in one summer may prove a step too far for Liverpool, particularly if Salah also leaves and with a desire to strengthen in other areas.

Quansah penned a long-term contract earlier this season until 2029, meaning Liverpool are in no hurry to sell, particularly on the cheap, and they will undoubtedly rely heavily on the England international next year for stability in a new-look defence.

However, a lot will determine on the future of Konate and Van Dijk – keeping both players would be ideal for Liverpool but could push Quansah to question the amount of game time he will receive next year.

Equally, a departure for even one of those players may require Liverpool to raise funds to adequately replace them, giving Slot and Liverpool plenty to think about going into a hectic summer.
