Andy Carroll has recently made the headlines for his modest wage at Bordeaux, but now the former Liverpool, Newcastle United and England hitman has been handed what is undoubtedly his most bizarre win bonus ever.

Carroll finds himself in French football’s fourth tier with six-time Ligue 1 winners Bordeaux following their administrative relegation because of financial problems.

The skint outfit are only allowed to pay Carroll a part-time wage that is not even enough to cover his housing costs and the difficulties that giant club face are further emphasised by what they resorted to giving their players by way of a win bonus last weekend.

Following a victory over Orleans last weekend that was vital to their promotion hopes, Sud Ouest states that each player was given a pair of the club’s official flip-flops that were excess from last year’s merchandise stock.

Bordeaux’s promotion hopes were further boosted on Saturday as they beat leaders Saint-Malo 1-0 at home.

According to Sud-Ouest, the reward for Carroll and his team-mates will be a jersey that the players wore earlier this season in a Coupe de France clash.

Bordeaux’s uncertain future

Although Bordeaux are publicly putting a brave face on their financial woes, the win bonuses they are dishing out to their players suggest that they remain in grave danger of greater problems.

Carroll, meanwhile, has had an incident-packed week as he missed a training session after being stuck in London because he had forgotten his residence permit.

He was back in time to feature in Saturday’s crunch game, setting Bordeaux up for five more big matches as they attempt to close down a five-point deficit to Stade Briochin, who they travel to next week, to claim top spot and promotion.
