The Spanish winger is the Gunners' top target for the flanks heading into the summer transfer window. Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta are desperate to bolster their side and Williams is among the players they are most persistently chasing.

The 22-year-old was already on the radar of Arsenal last summer, but they ultimately refrained from splashing the cash on him. Arteta has recognised that this may have been a mistake and instructed Berta to do everything in his power to convince him to move.

Williams is as yet undecided over his future as he remains fully focused on reaching the Europa League final with his boyhood side Athletic Club, with the showpiece set to take place at their San Mames home ground.

Berta wants a decision from the attacker soon and is in continuous contact with his representatives, as exclusively revealed by FootballTransfers.

Romano on Williams

Arsenal are the side most persistently pushing for the signing of Williams at this stage and they are the clear favourites to secure his signature should he indeed decide to move this summer.

Arsenal have already informed Athletic Club and the player that they are willing to pay his €58 million release clause and to shoulder his hefty wages.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, it is still not set in stone that Williams will be a Gunners player come next season. In fact, Arsenal could still face competition for his signing from several clubs.

"It’s too early to say, Nico won’t make any decision now for sure," Romano told GIVEMESPORT. "His focus is on Athletic and they have the Europa League final at home, so there will be no decisions shortly. Arsenal want to try, but there will be 3/4 clubs in the race."
