Ruben Amorim appears to have lost faith with Andre Onana after a series of high-profile errors, which resulted in the 28-year-old being dropped for the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle last weekend.

Although Onana is expected to return to Amorim’s side for the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon on Thursday, United have begun to scout long-term successors to the Cameroonian in the hopes of signing a new keeper this summer.

According to German outlet BILD, United have become the latest club to enquire about youngster Kaua Santos, who has broken into Eintracht Frankfurt’s starting line-up in recent months.

The 22-year-old starred for the Bundesliga side in their 1-1 draw with Tottenham last week, which resulted in United director Christopher Vivell asking his Frankfurt counterpart about Santos’ future with the club.

United allegedly considered a move for Santos last year but Frankfurt director Markus Krosche is quoted as insisting that the Brazilian ‘will definitely not be sold this summer’ even if their internal long-term valuation of €60 million is met.

United set for Santos disappointment after Frankfurt commitment

Santos joined Frankfurt as an unknown quantity in 2023 from Flamengo’s youth team for just €1.6m and he went on to make his senior debut for the club in September last year.

The 6 foot 6 inch shot stopper has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, deputising for veteran Kevin Trapp, although his performances have led to a belief that Frankfurt’s senior custodian may never regain his place in goal.

Frankfurt extended Santos’ contract in October until 2030 and signalled to the player that they are planning on him for the long-term and believe that he is best suited to continue developing at the club.

Those close to Santos believe that additional development at Frankfurt could lead to a similar rise to Manuel Neuer, who joined Bayern Munich aged 25 after playing more than 200 games for Schalke.

Santos’ progress has led to a firm stance for Frankfurt, who alerted United and Tottenham that it would be ‘very expensive’ to sign the wonderkid this summer, leaving Amorim’s side perhaps being forced to look elsewhere for their Onana replacement.
