Manchester United could be in the rare position of having leverage over a rival side this summer in a deal that could have significant implications over Ruben Amorim’s transfer window.

United have often found themselves on the wrong side of a transfer battle which has, on numerous occasions, seen them held to ransom and paying over the top valuations for flawed players, such as the €95 million transfer for Antony.

However, the shoe could be on the other foot for United with reports that Antonio Conte has demanded that the signing of Alejandro Garnacho becomes Napoli’s ‘number one objective’.

Conte this week revealed his frustration at not signing Garnacho in January after the sale of star man Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the Napoli boss suggested that his days at the club are numbered due to the failures in the transfer market.

The Italian is now set for showdown talks with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis at the end of the season, with Calciomercato claiming that Conte ‘expects’ to have Garnacho in his squad ‘no matter the cost’ if he is to remain in charge of the club.

Conte is thought to be demanding at least five or six signings to be competitive in both Serie A and the Champions League after seeing Napoli’s title challenge this season fall off following the sale of Kvaratskhelia.

Conte standoff could have major impact on Man United's transfer plans

Conte’s make-or-break demands could be a blessing for United after Napoli had refused to meet their €60 million demands for Garnacho in January.

United had reportedly considered lowering their asking price to €45m in order to cash in on the youngster and raise funds through his sale this summer but Napoli’s need to appease Conte could allow the Red Devils to finally wield some power in transfer negotiations.

However, with Conte long-having a history of significant demands of clubs throughout his career, Napoli may also simply part ways with their manager and reject his threats, which may see interest in Garnacho ended altogether.

Although Chelsea are still among the sides thought to be considering a summer move for Garnacho and, with United open to the 20-year-old’s departure at the right price, a big money sale could still be on the cards for the Amorim’s side.
