Arsenal managed to achieve exactly what they set out to do this summer: upgrade their team.

Article continues under the video

The Gunners have improved each campaign under the tenure of Mikel Arteta and that is partly due to their shrewd activity in the transfer market under him.

In the summer of 2023, Arsenal broke their transfer record to sign Declan Rice from West Ham for €116.6 million, while Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya (loan) also arrived as the Gunners spent big after missing out on the English top flight title.

In fact, the club haven't been shy in splashing the cash recently to try and fight the might of Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League, and with an injection of Champions League money, they spent fairly big yet again in the summer of 2024.

David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino all arrived on permanent deals, while Raheem Sterling and goalkeeper Neto joined on loan.

As always with such a big club, the Arsenal transfer rumour mill continues to be in full swing, with Arteta always keen to add to the talent he has already brought to the club.

Neville warns Arsenal

Former Premier League winner Gary Neville claims the biggest battle is yet to come for Arsenal, but they can match up to current champions Man City.

“The two best teams in the country," announced the ex-England international on Sky Sports after the game.

“Arsenal were so, so close. In a big, big battle today.

"But the biggest battle is still to come.”

More on Haaland outburst

Piers Morgan slams refereeing

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has hit out at Man City, suggesting they have favours from the officials when playing at home.

While appearing on talkSPORT, he claimed that the league leaders should also have been down to ten men.

"It should have been three if Gabriel scored a brilliant header but he missed an easier one a few minutes earlier, we were all over them like a rash! And by the way, why did City still have 11 players?" Morgan said.

"Why did Haaland, who tried to decapitate Gabriel with the ball, right, who was running over players... Why did Walker, who in the goal video, Walker's put on Gabriel, does a terrible job thankfully, but he's poking him like he's got a cattle prod, where are the red cards and yellow cards for these miscreants?

"The truth is, one rule for City at the Etihad, one rule for everybody else and despite that once again abusing the rules, we managed to come within 90 seconds or so of what would have been the greatest win of Arteta's managerial career."

Raya spotted with injury

Arsenal hero David Raya was seen limping as he left the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The goalkeeper was seen hobbling away after turning down interview requests.

The Spanish international conceded a dramatic late goal in an otherwise incredible performance in the -2 draw with Man City.

Haaland has words

Erling Haaland had some choice words for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta after Sunday's monumental Premier League clash.

The Norwegian slapped The Gunners' boss on the back and told him to 'stay humble'.

Arteta turned to answer but striker Gabriel Jesus got there first, only to be labelled as a 'clown' by Haaland.

Rodri out with ACL tear

Arsenal title rivals Manchester City suffered a blow as Rodri was carried off during the side's 2-2 draw.

The midfielder is feared to be the latest high-profile footballer to have suffered a torn ACL.

Gunners face competition for Gloukh

Man Utd are now emerging as a potential suitor for Arsenal target Oscar Gloukh.

The 20-year-old RB Salzburg star has three goals and two assists in four league matches so far this season.

The Isreal international has impressed since moving to Austria from his boyhood club Maccabi Tel Aviv in January 2023.

Barcelona and Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the youngster.

Juve compete for Osimhem

Arsenal and Chelsea face competition from Serie A giants Juventus for the signature of Victor Osimhem from Napoli.

Stones on 'dirty' Arsenal

Manchester City defender John Stones was asked about Arsenal's tactics after Sunday's thriller.

"I wouldn't say they've mastered it. They've been doing it for a few years," the England centre-back claimed.

"You can call it clever and dirty, whichever way you call it, it upsets the rhythm for everyone. They use it for their advantage.

"We controlled our emotions really well. They made it difficult for us being so deep and having so many people around the box. It will be something we have to review."

Arteta furious with ref

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was left fuming after Leandro Trossard received a red card for kicking the ball away in the first half of Sunday's bout at Manchester City.

"We were more efficient and went 2-1 up and then there were two incidents, very similar, one in particular, but had a very different outcome which then forces you to have a game which nobody wants to watch," the Spanish manager said.

"I think it's very clear. Very obvious. Hopefully what 100 per cent of what people thinks. It's not my job to come here and judge what happened.

"It's already the second time it has happened in five games, which is really, really worrying if we want to see the best Premier League."

Arsenal stars set unfortunate record

Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz both broke a sensational record during Sunday's clash with Manchester City.

The two Arsenal stars failed to complete a single pass during the game.

They became the first two outfield players in history (since Opta records began) to have played 89+ minutes of a Premier League match and achieve this unfortunate accomplishment.
