Arsenal managed to achieve in the summer exactly what they set out to do: upgrade the team.

Article continues under the video

The Gunners have improved each campaign under the tenure of Mikel Arteta and that is partly due to their shrewd activity in the transfer market under him.

In the summer of 2023, Arsenal broke their transfer record to sign Declan Rice from West Ham for €116.6 million, while Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya (loan) also arrived as the Gunners spent big after missing out on the English top flight title.

In fact, the club haven't been shy in splashing the cash recently to try and fight the might of Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League, and with an injection of Champions League money, they spent fairly big yet again in the summer of 2024.

David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino have all arrived on permanent deals, while Raheem Sterling and goalkeeper Neto arrived on loan.

As always with such a big club, the Arsenal transfer rumour mill continues to be in full swing, with Arteta always keen to add to the talent he has already brought to the club.

Surprise swap deal?

Arsenal have been linked with making a surprise swap deal for Inter attacker Marcus Thuram, with Gabriel Jesus going the other way.

According to Inter Live, they are willing to offer the Brazilian plus cash for the forward.

Romano on Gyokeres links

Fabrizio Romano has revealed Arsenal were never close to signing Viktor Gyokeres in the summer - but only because of the demands of Sporting.

"Clubs were not willing to spend something crazy like €100m, his release clause, this summer. There was strong interest, especially from England, for example Arsenal at the beginning of the summer were considering strikers. Benjamin Sesko was someone they were keen on, Victor Osimhen was an opportunity, then Gyokeres as well, but ultimately they decided not to spend that kind of money on that position," he wrote for the Daily Briefing.

"Gyokeres remains appreciated, also by many clubs around Europe, but this summer no one was willing to pay his release clause, and so he was never close to leaving Sporting. His club were never going to accept something like €50-60m."

Arsenal 'lead' David race

Arsenal are one of the sides leading the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David, Tuttojuve reports.

Tottenham and Newcastle are also interested in the Canada international, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Witness no fitness

The Martin Odegaard injury is the latest in a string of bad news for Arsenal.

He joins Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino on the crocked list and Declan Rice is suspended.

There's only one man to save the season now...

Sane could be targeted

Arsenal could target Leroy Sane as a possible replacement if new loanee Raheem Sterling does not work out.

Mikel Arteta was happy to see the 29-year-old come through the door on deadline day.

However if the former Chelsea star cannot find success in North London then the Gunners could examine winger Sane, who is entering the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich.

Real Madrid fight Arsenal for Sporting star

Real Madrid have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, accoring to reports in Portugal.

The Sweden international notched 43 goals in all competitions for the club, but the Gunners failed to land his signature this summer. Sporting have placed a €100 million release clause in Gyokeres’ contract.

Madrid are allegedly looking to splash out on the forward in January as they look for a no. 9 to play alongside Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jnr.
