The Blues spent a world-record fee as compensation to take the Englishman from Brighton in September but after barely six months in charge, he has lost his job.

Few would argue with the decision. Chelsea, a club that expected to be fighting for a top-four finish this season after spending a world-record sum in the transfer market over a slew of young players, they have taken the decision to sack Potter with the club languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table after losing 2-0 to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Despite Chelsea’s poor results, though, there had been little indication that Potter would be sacked on Sunday, so the reaction of Twitter was a mixture of shock and delight from Blues fans and from supporters of other sides.

Former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann is favourite to become Chelsea's next manager.
