Julien Laurens claims that, while Chelsea should keep the Italian in order to retain some kind of stability at a club that has gone through countless managers in recent years, there is very much a risk Maresca could get the chop.

Much will depend on how Chelsea finish the rest of the season and whether they qualify for the Champions League, which was their objective for the campaign.

Maresca at risk of sack

After a brilliant start to the season in which Chelsea even threatened a title challenge, the wheels have come off in 2025.

Maresca’s men have only picked up five wins in their last 16 matches in the Premier League, and Champions League qualification is now in serious doubt.

Chelsea find themselves sixth in the table with six games of the season remaining, one point and place outside the Champions League places.

Maresca has been heavily linked with the sack in recent weeks, and it appears he has also lost the support of the club's fans.

Chelsea appointed Maresca as their new head coach last summer on a five-year contract.

The Italian succeeded Mauricio Pochettino as the club’s boss.

Chelsea reportedly paid €10 million in compensation to buy the Italian out of his Leicester contract, illustrating how highly they rated him. Maresca quickly emerged as one of the top candidates for the job and personal terms did not prove an issue.

Maresca had led Leicester City to the Championship title last season, playing some of the most impressive football in England in the early parts of the campaign.

There had been some opposition to Maresca’s appointment from fans, though, with Leicester losing seven of their final 14 games of the season and just about limping over the line.

After a bright start at Chelsea, Maresca and fans will be hoping that he doesn’t oversee another poor end to the season this term.
