Arsenal have rushed through a Deadline Day transfer for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, with the deal complete and only the formalities left to be dusted off.

A move for the Italy international has been sped through in under 24 hours after it became apparent that there would be no way for them to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

The transfer is set to cost the Emirates club in the region of £12 million, with Jorginho signing a deal that will run until 2024, with the option of an additional year.

It is a transfer that has brought a split opinion from Arsenal fans, with some believing that the deal is a good stop-gap option while others think that they have missed on a superior option.

In any case, it is a transfer that they will have to accept, with leaked pictures of Jorginho in the club’s colours already having appeared.

It was in these images that Jorginho’s new squad number has inadvertently been revealed.

In a picture of the player being interviewed by club media, he is seen sporting his new kit, which is emblazoned with the No.20, which will be the jersey he wares at his new club.

This will be the first time in his career that the 31-year-old will have worn this jersey number. Since he moved to Chelsea in 2018 from Napoli, he has held down the No.5 shirt – an unusual number for a midfield player.

While in Italy, he sported the 8 jersey for Napoli in five successive seasons, having begun his career wearing the No.19 shirt for Hellas Verona when he was breaking into the professional game.

While playing for Italy, he has typically worn the No.8 jersey, although he has been seen in the 5 shirt too, as well as 7 and 14.
