Manchester United supporters have branded Wout Weghorst an “absolute disgrace” after completing his loan spell without scoring a single Premier League goal.

Weghorst arrived as something of a desperate January move as manager Erik ten Hag scrambled to find a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who had been released during the World Cup break by mutual consent after falling out with the Dutchman and the club in spectacular style.

Ronaldo had a difficult campaign at Old Trafford, scoring just a single league goal in the Ten Hag era, yet this was nothing compared to the troubles that Weghorst endured, despite receiving the unerring support of his manager, who appreciated his industry and strong team ethic.

Loaned from Burnley, who had to recall him from Besiktas to complete the deal, Weghorst was considered a flop in 2021/22 as he netted only twice as the Clarets were relegated.

The 30-year-old, though, failed to score at all for Man Utd – leaving their fans wholly unimpressed with all-round contribution during his five-month spell at Old Trafford.

Indeed, they were given a timely reminder of his ‘qualities’ as he came off the bench in a 2-1 win over Fulham and missed a simple chance.

Weghorst, who may still have a role to play at Man Utd in the FA Cup final next weekend, presently has just two goals and three assists to his name in 30 outings for the Red Devils, having netted in the EFL Cup final against Newcastle and also against Real Betis is a 4-1 Europa League win.
