Newcastle tipped for surprise move for Arsenal transfer target

Newcastle could be in the running for Moises Caicedo, according to reporter Ben Jacobs.

The Brighton midfielder was linked to a move away from the Amex Stadium and the club had a number of bids turned down for him.

The 21-year-old, who has played just 31 senior games during his time in Premier League, was at the forefront of discussion during the window, with links to the Gunners, Liverpool and Chelsea, but ultimately a move didn’t transpire.

Jacobs said about the player’s future on Twitter Spaces: “I genuinely believe it’s going to be very difficult for Brighton to get £70million for Moises Caicedo in the summer, I think the valuation could easily drop to more like £60-65million and then you start looking at is there value for Liverpool to enter the race who didn’t really want to go above that number."

The transfer expert then said he would not be surprised if Newcastle made a move: “Somebody else who could surprise us with Caicedo as well - Newcastle United might be a team looking for a midfielder and Caicedo might come into the fore, especially if you consider Joelinton is playing in a more advanced role, Jonjo Shelvey has left, so Newcastle could be quite active in the market for some kind of central or box to box midfielder as well.”

Arsenal had two bids for Caicedo twice rebuffed both times as Brighton held onto their man.

The Seagulls slapped a £90million asking price on Caicedo in January but with his contract up in 2025, that would surely reduce by the time the summer rolls around.

Newcastle January deals

Newcastle brought in Anthony Gordon during the window for a potential fee of around £45m, as well as Harrison Ashby from West Ham.

Forward Callum Wilson told The Footballer’s Football Podcast he rates the former Everton winger.

“I think he’s a good signing,” said Wilson. “He’s youthful, he’s energetic. You’ve got to buy players that you can mould into the Newcastle way – high-pressing, energetic, want to play football.”
