The Premier League has released a statement confirming that a third transfer window will be available for clubs.

England’s top-flight has revealed that a special 10-day window will be available to teams in what has been called an “exceptional registration period”.

Why is there an extra transfer window?

The extra transfer window has been included in the Premier League calendar to allow clubs competing in the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA to add new players to their squad prior to the competition.

It is expected that other leagues that have participants in the expanded competition will follow this lead, giving some of the top clubs in the world the opportunity to trade players.

What players could move?

This new transfer period is likely to be extensively used when it comes to players with expiring contracts who will not take part in the competition.

For example, it will likely provide Real Madrid the chance to sign Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold before the competition begins. Al-Hilal could also add Mohamed Salah to their ranks if rumours of the Reds star moving to the Saudi Pro League come to fruition.

Such moves will not be big-money transfers given the players involved will have a matter of days left on their existing deals.

But there is also the possibility of some blockbuster transfers getting down early in the summer, with Manchester City, Chelsea and even PSG among the potential big spenders.

Premier League statement on summer transfer windows

The Premier League confirmed the presence of an additional transfer period in the summer of 2025, which will feature a six-day break between windows.

In a statement, it confirmed:

“Premier League clubs have today [27 March] agreed the dates for the Summer 2025 Transfer Window.

“The window will open early, between Sunday 1 June and Tuesday 10 June, due to an exceptional registration period relating to the FIFA Club World Cup.

“It will then reopen on Monday 16 June and close on Monday 1 September.”
