Portugal secured qualification to the second round of the World Cup after their impressive 2-0 win over Uruguay in their second group stage match.

Bruno Fernandes scored twice for the Selecao in a fine display from the midfielder, adding to his two assists from the opening match against Ghana.

There were doubts around Portugal going into the competition but they are slowly wiping those away with their displays and go into the final group match against South Korea with calmness.

However, a lot of the chatter around their win surrounded Cristiano Ronaldo, and his no-goal, as the first goal was celebrated as though he scored it himself, despite not touching the ball.

Ronaldo goal shows desperation

For Portugal’s first goal in the second half of the match, Fernandes whipped in a fine cross from the left side, intended for Ronaldo, but the ball crept into the net, bamboozling the Uruguayan goalkeeper.

Ronaldo did go for the ball with his head and was close to touching it, but despite his keen celebrations and how close he was, the goal was not his.

It was given to Fernandes, as replays showed Ronaldo didn’t touch the ball – his celebrations were perhaps an indication of his desperation to get on the scoresheet.

Ronaldo hasn’t had the best season: netting just thrice, twice in the Europa League for Manchester United, and is now without a club having seen his contract terminated.

He’s always been a keen goalscorer and a person who always wants to get on the scoresheet to boost his status and personal records, but yesterday was probably an indication of desperation.

He needs goals to boost his chances of landing a club soon: not many will be willing to take on an ageing forward on a massive wage, who left his previous club because of an unsanctioned interview.
