Despite the constant rumours surrounding a potential return, Barcelona are not thinking about bringing Lionel Messi back, according to a report.

Inter Miami have been officially eliminated from MLS playoff contention, meaning that, after the conclusion of the regular season at the end of the month, Messi and his teammates are set for four months without domestic league action.

This fact recently gave rise to fresh reports linking the Argentine World Cup winner with a triumphant return to Barcelona, following a precedent set by David Beckham who had two spells at AC Milan while under contract with the LA Galaxy way back when.

As FootballTransfers exclusively reported last week regarding a potential return to boyhood club Newell's Old Boys, Messi is not, at this point, thinking about his future, having only just signed for Miami, and their poor end to the season likely won't have changed that given that there are still games to be played and January is a long way away.

This is now being echoed in Spain.

Barca have other priorities

According to Mundo Deportivo, there is nothing to the rumours linking Messi with a sensational Blaugrana comeback. Indeed, the report goes so far as to assert that Barcelona have given the prospect of re-signing the 36-year-old on loan no consideration whatsoever.

The Catalans have other priorities and the fact that they are still severely strapped for cash would have made the operation difficult anyway even if Miami had agreed to shoulder a part of his salary for the duration of the loan.

Barcelona are still trying to negotiate the January arrival of Brazilian wonderkid Vitor Roque within the limits of their Financial Fair Play wiggle room, while head coach Xavi would also like to find a long-term solution for the defensive midfield position as Oriol Romeu was always merely a short-term fix following Sergio Busquets' departure for Miami.
