The 2024 summer transfer window has long been shut across all major European leagues and clubs are unable to sign new players until January, unless they are free agents.

There is not long to go now, though, until the transfer window reopens, with just six weeks until the January market begins.

This past summer saw spending dip across the board, with Premier League and Saudi Pro League sides slightly holding back after splashing ludicrous sums in 2023.

For the first time in a number of years, there were no €100 million-plus transfers, with the most expensive deal seeing Julian Alvarez join Atletico Madrid from Man City for €75m. Indeed, only one transfer (Alvarez) made the list for the 50 expensive transfers of all time.

However, January 2025 promises to be an intriguing transfer window and multiple high-profile deals are likely to go through.

Man City want to sign a replacement for ACL-victim Rodri, Chelsea are on the look out for a top striker, while Man Utd have a new manager in Ruben Amorim following the sacking of Erik ten Hag and will look to strengthen their squad.

Real Madrid are still lacking a Toni Kroos replacement in midfield and need defenders after the ACL injuries to Eder Militao and David Carvajal.

Juventus have also confirmed they will sign a centre back following the ACL injury suffered by Gleison Bremer.

Below, FootballTransfers runs through the opening and closing dates of the January transfer window across Europe’s top five leagues and Saudi Arabia.
