Daniel Campos claims that Diego Simeone’s side scouted the Paraguay international and were impressed with what they saw, but were not in a position to make a transfer bid due to the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis.

Almiron is likely to leave this summer, whether it be to Atletico or someone else.

“Look, I was able to come in contact with their coaching staff [Atletico Madrid] and they told me that they were interested and just scouting him, but never in the position to make an offer,” Campos told Paraguayan radio station Futgol 970.

“They were just looking at him. But I think in the future, it’s possible, why not? There are also big teams in England for which they are inquiring about him and we talk.

“I have no doubt will leave, I think it will happen soon, perhaps in June [2021] because this year, everything was disorganized on the transfers due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Campos believes that, if the pandemic hadn’t struck, Almiron wouldn’t be at Newcastle.

“There in England, they say he’s a “Premier League-style” player. I think that if it wasn’t for the pandemic, he would’ve been playing in a different team. But oh well, what happened happened,” he continued.

“He has to continue being on a team where the aspirations are different, we know that there is a league with six strong teams and the others are fighting for the remaining spots. And in that part, Newcastle is there.”

In January of 2019 Almiron joined Newcastle for a club-record fee of around £21m (€23.4m). He would go on to score eight goals and assist two other others in all competitions in 2019/20.

In the 2020/21 campaign so far, he has one goal and three assists in seven starts.
