Saturday’s humiliating 5-1 home thrashing at the hands of Stuttgart was the final straw for the Dortmund hierarchy.

Favre has now been sacked as coach, with the Dortmund players informed on Sunday afternoon about the decision.

“Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Lucien Favre,” a club statement read.

“The club would like to thank Lucien for his dedication and wish him success in his future.

“Assistant coach Edin Terzic has been appointed as interim manager until the end of the current season. Terzic’s coaching team will be joined by Sebastian Geppert and Otto Addo.”

Marco Rose, Jesse Marsch, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick are considered the frontrunners to be Dortmund’s next permanent manager.

The 63-year-old Favre arrived at Dortmund in 2018 and took the club to successive second-place finishes behind serial champions Bayern Munich.

However, their poor start to the current season which saw them fall to fifth place in the standings with four league losses already proved to be Favre’s downfall.
