Hasenhuttl: Southampton may have to sell Ings
Southampton boss Ralph Hassenhuttl says the club may be forced to move star striker Danny Ings on at the end of the season.
Ings’ contract with The Saints is due to expire at the end of June 2022, and has been in negotiations with the club over a renewal.
However, it’s been reported that the striker is seeking an improvement on his current £75,000-a-week deal.
His demands are seemingly a bridge too far for Southampton, who, in light of the ongoing pandemic, are suffering financially. Saints coach Hasenhuttl has expressed doubts about whether Ings could remain at the club past this season.
More news:
“We are in a situation where every club is struggling with finances,’ said the Austrian, as reported by The Mirror.
“We are trying to keep the club in a healthy way and it is not only about Ingsy, there are others who also want to extend their contract.
“If it is not what we expect to pay in the future, then we have to look for somebody else who is cheaper, but we know it always should be win-win for both.
“If they want to make the next step in the summer to a bigger club and there is an offer fitting to the player, then we can always negotiate.”
Ings has been at the club since the summer of 2018, when he arrived on loan from Liverpool after failing to make much of a mark at Anfield.
Following a good season at St.Mary’s in 2018-19, The club signed him on a permanent basis.
Ings has scored 40 goals in 81 games in all competitions, and has netted seven goals in 13 games this season.
He was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham during the last transfer window, with Jose Mourinho reportedly an admirer. However, Spurs eventually signed Carlos Vinicius from Benfica.
