Instead, Solskjaer has used the January window to cut loose a number of fringe players that weren’t picking up game time this season.

Young defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah made a permanent move to Bayer Leverkusen for a fee believed to be around £1.5 million, while Jesse Lingard, Facundo Pellistri and Tahith Chong have moved on loan to West Ham United, Alaves and Club Brugge respectively.

When asked about any potential transfer deals before the window came to a shut, the Man Utd manager confirmed that central defender Teden Mengi was set to depart on loan for Derby County but that no deals would be made to sign any more players.

“No-one will come in. Don’t stay up late,” said Soljskaer when he spoke to the media on Monday afternoon.

“Phil [Jones] has been recovering from a knee injury after an operation he had. He’s working hard to be included again, he will be on the list and hopefully he’ll get his fitness back sooner rather than later.”

We’ve made decisions we feel have been good for individuals with the young players moving on and giving them the chance to play more football is important for us.

“Our group is a tight knit group, we don’t have too many players in excess and hopefully Jesse can get going at West Ham as well.”

The news may come as some surprise to a number of Man Utd fans, who would have been hoping to hear Solskjaer confirm some last-minute signings to help boost the club’s title challenge.

On Saturday evening the Old Trafford side were held to a 0-0 draw against Arsenal, which opened up a four point gap at the top of the table between United and their cross-city rivals Manchester City.
