The 33-year-old Di Maria’s deal was due to expire at the end of June but after talks that began in late 2020, he has reached an agreement with PSG to prolong his adventure at Parc des Princes.

The Argentina international attacker has previously indicated that PSG will be his last club in Europe.

Di Maria began his career with Rosario in Argentina before moving to Benfica in 2007 and subsequently to Real Madrid three years later. After starring in the Spanish capital, notably being named man of the match in the 2014 Champions League final, he moved to Manchester United for a British record £60 million.

Di Maria, though, failed to show his best form with Man Utd and moved to PSG only a year later for £44m.

He has quietly excelled in the French capital, scoring 86 goals and amassing nearly 250 appearances in all competitions in his six years at the club. Indeed, he is only four assists short of the club’s all-time record, set by Safet Susic with 103.

Previously, Di Maria had indicated his desire to stay at PSG in order to play with Lionel Messi, who is on course to becoming a free agent when his Barcelona contract expires in the summer.

Speaking in January, he told TyC Sports: “I had the opportunity at one point in my career to go to Barcelona but it didn’t happen.

“It looks like there’s another chance coming up to play with him, but my contract is ending and I don’t know what’s going to happen. But I’d be delighted to have the chance to play alongside him.

“I’ve already played with Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe… if I played with Leo on top of that, I could quietly retire afterwards.”

Di Maria’s comments did not go down well with Barcelona, who PSG dumped out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage 5-2 on aggregate.
