Guardiola reveals why he let Man Utd sign Cavani

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has explained why he decided against signing Edinson Cavani last summer.

Cavani joined Manchester United on a Bosman transfer after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expired.

The Uruguayan has had a decent season with The Red Devils, scoring seven goals from just 13 starts in all competitions.

However, Guardiola says he never really considered signing the 34-year-old.

“We have Gabriel (Jesus) and we were waiting for Sergio (Aguero) to come back. Ferran (Torres) can play there really well too,” Pep explained.

“He’s a player I admire a lot. I like that the guy commits his whole career in many countries and he’s doing well.”

On Sunday, Man City host Man United in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

City are in incredible form, having won 21 games in a row, but Pep is not taking the game for granted.

“They are so strong in all departments,” Pep warned.

“Defensively, and Bruno Fernandes, the speed up front with (Daniel) James, (Marcus) Rashford, (Anthony) Martial, the experience of Cavani, a player I admire the most for what he’s done with his career.

“It’s Manchester United. It’s a privilege to compete with them, to be in front of them. Sunday is no exception. It’s our target to do what we’ve done lately.”

Man City can go 15 points clear if they beat Man Utd.
