Pau Torres has played down the possibility of a potential move to Manchester United this summer by saying he is looking forward to playing in the Champions League for Villarreal.

The 24-year-old is currently one of the most sought after young central defenders in Europe after his exploits for Villarreal over the past couple of seasons.

With Sergio Ramos not called up for the Euros, he is set to play a starring role at the back for Spain in the upcoming championships, in which the transfer spotlight will be shining on his shoulders.

Man Utd are one of the clubs credited with an interest in Torres and see him as an ideal partner for Harry Maguire, but Torres’ words since winning the Europa League with his beloved Villarreal would suggest they need to start looking at other targets.

Torres going nowhere?

He previously commented that he could “only see himself in yellow” for the moment, as he played a part in the Yellow Submarine winning not only their first ever European trophy, but the first major trophy in their history.

As a Villarreal fan, he is now eager to continue the journey into the Champions League group stage.

“Right now I have a contract with Villarreal. We’ve won a European trophy. We’ve shown we can compete against any opponent,” he said.

“Next year we have the Champions League ahead of us, and that’s what I’m focused on. Those rumours mean that you’re doing a good job. I’m calm.

“Those rumours came out a while ago and I don’t think my performance has changed, it’s been good.”

With Ramos not in the picture with Spain, Torres will likely be the starring centre-back for Spain in the upcoming Euro 2020.

La Roja are in Group E alongside Sweden, Poland and Slovakia.
