Paul Pogba seems certain to stay at Old Trafford for another season but his early season form has shown why Manchester United simply must tie him up to a new contract.

Pogba was expected to be one of the hottest transfer targets of the summer window but in truth his name has barely featured in the news.

Nevertheless, it is no secret that Pogba wishes to depart Man Utd – unhappy with his treatment in the media - and there has been no progress in contract talks.

Pogba’s deal at Old Trafford expires next year and it seems most likely right now he will leave on a Bosman then in order to join either PSG or Real Madrid.

But his early season form has demonstrated why Man Utd must do everything in their power to convince Pogba to prolong his stay.

How many assists does Pogba have?

No player in Europe’s big five leagues has delivered more assists this season than the 28-year-old.

Pogba has five assists in just two Premier League games, already surpassing his total number of assists for the entirety of the 2020-21 season.

He set up an incredible four goals in the 5-1 win over Leeds, including arguably the pass of the season so far when he half-volleyed the ball into the path of Mason Greenwood to score.

Pogba then made Greenwood’s equaliser last weekend to earn Man Utd a 1-1 draw at Southampton.

The former Juventus star has always been a player capable of moments of genius – both in terms of goals and assists – but his actual numbers have not always been as high as they should be.

Now playing in a more advanced role to the left at the start of the current campaign, Pogba is flourishing and this has helped turn him into the most creative player in Europe in these early stages of 2021-22.

The next best player in Europe when it comes to assists is Andrej Kramaric, who has made four goals for Hoffenheim.

Then comes just four players to have three assists; Kylian Mbappe of PSG, Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund, Borna Sosa of Stuttgart and Moses Simon of Nantes.
