Manager Jurgen Klopp revealed after the game that Elliott had sustained a dislocated ankle and had gone to hospital.

“It is a bad injury. Ankle dislocated, we could put it back. He’s now in the hospital, so we have to wait," Klopp said.

"He played an incredible game again, he’s an incredible player. Now he’s out.

“Do I want such a young boy to have this experience that early in his career? No, but now it’s the case and we have to be there – and we will be there.

“We will play football without him, but we will wait for him as well. Because obviously he’s a top, top, top player.”

Elliott started the game on Sunday at Elland Road but went down on the hour mark in agony after a challenge from Leeds substitute Pascal Struijk.

Struijk dived in for the ball as Elliott raced down the right wing with the ball, but the 18-year-old was immediately left in agony.

Teammate Mo Salah instantly called for Liverpool’s medics, who raced onto the pitch to attend to Elliott.

After several minutes of treatment, Elliott was stretchered off the pitch with his left leg in a brace and with his oxygen in his mouth.

The Leeds fans gave Elliott a standing ovation as he left the pitch, and the teenager managed to applaud them.

Struijk was sent off by the referee for his challenge and the match ended 3-0 to the away side. Salah, Fabinho and Sadio Mane scored the goals.

Immediately, social media sites were inundated with messages of support and love for Elliott.

Liverpool singled out Elliott when posting out the result on their official twitter account: “Three points at Elland Road, but all our thoughts are with Harvey.”

Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford tweeted: “Ahhhh man rivalry aside that looks really nasty, no one wants to see that, thoughts are with you Harvey.”

Former Liverpool defender Djimi Traore posted: “I wish Harvey Elliott a speedy recovery. Fantastic young player.”

Another ex-Liverpool star, Luis Garcia, wrote: “Can't believe it !! All the best Harvey Elliott, you'll be back very soon even stronger.”

Elliott also received support from his former club Blackburn Rovers where he spent the 2020-21 season on loan.

“All our thoughts are with Harvey Elliott, after the former Rovers man seems to have suffered a serious injury. Come back stronger, Harvey!”

Finally, Elliott himself sent a thank you from the treatment table to all those who had sent messages of support.

“Thank you for the messages of support, guys. Road to recovery. YNWA.”
