Rooney emerges as shock candidate for Newcastle job
Wayne Rooney would be open to helping Newcastle United on 'a short-term basis' after the club sacked manager Steve Bruce.
The current Derby County boss has been linked with the Newcastle job since the club was taken over in a Saudi-Arabia backed deal worth £305million.
And, according to ChronicleLive, the 35-year-old is understood to be interested in helping Newcastle out now Bruce has left the club.
Speculation about Rooney's Derby future has persisted since the club went into administration and hit with a 12 point deduction.
And speculation over his next move has already started to gain momentum again now that Bruce has been relieved of his duties.
Graeme Jones will take interim charge of the Premier League side whilst the search for Bruce's successor continues. The Magpies travel to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace in their next match.
And it is reported that Rooney is part of the shortlist of managers currently being considered as next Newcastle manager.
Rooney came close to joining Newcastle in his playing days before joining Manchester United and going on to become their greatest ever goalscorer.
What did Rooney say about his Derby future
Speaking about his Derby future last month, Rooney said:
"I have said a few times over the months that I'm committed to this club, I'm committed to the group of players, I'm committed to the staff, I care about them.
"I will keep doing everything I can to help us get through this. I think we will get through this for the better.
"We're going to have tough times ahead in the near future, I know that, but it's my job now to start rebuilding this club and put it back together."
