Chelsea are at risk of losing Mason Mount next season with the England midfielder underpaid at Stamford Bridge yet dragging his heels on a new contract.

Mason Mount has been one of the top performers at Chelsea since breaking into the first team three seasons ago, and this term has contributed 12 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.

Whilst Mount's £4.6 million per year is not to be laughed at, it is significantly less than the £14.1m the 11-goal, six assist Timo Werner earns, or the £10.3m that Saul Niguez - scorer of a single goal in 21 outings in all competitions - brings home.

The Sun reports that Chelsea had planned to offer Mount improved terms earlier this season, but their hands have been tied since sanctions imposed upon Roman Abramovich due to his links with Vladimir Putin against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Mount, a Gareth Southgate favourite for England who has four goals and five assists for the Three Lions, also has no shortage of potential suitors.

Klopp: 'Mount worth 60m!'

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has previously spoken of his admiration for the midfielder, saying that "Mason Mount for sure is worth £60m, maybe more," when the Blues spent that much to sign Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund in 2019.

Eddie Howe - now manager of the richest club in world football at Newcastle - also attempted to take Mount on loan when he was still in the Bournemouth dugout.

Mount's yearly salary works out at £88,000 per week, which puts him among the lowest earners in Chelsea's first team. Reece James and Ruben Loftus-Cheek earn less, but it is standard practice at Chelsea to pay marquee signings more than academy graduates.

With just two years left on his contract and no improved terms in sight, Chelsea's rivals could start bidding for Mount's loyalty as soon as the autumn.
