Once Todd Boehly’s Chelsea takeover goes through as expected, one of the first priorities of the club’s new ownership will be to immediately kick their transfer market into action.

Chelsea have been completely hamstrung since March as a result of a transfer embargo, unable to make deals or extend player contracts.

Subsequently, Chelsea will see two of their central defenders leave this summer in Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger. Christensen is set to join Barcelona and Rudiger Real Madrid on Bosman Transfers.

Chelsea will likely sign two starting centre backs this summer and, according to football.london, Torino defender Gleison Bremer is being considered to replace Rudiger.

Bremer has been watched by Chelsea on a number of occasions this season and the Blues are considering making an official bid.

If he did arrive, the 25-year-old would potentially be a fantastic signing.

Who is Bremer?

This season he has been by some distance the best defender in Italy’s Serie A.

Playing in the middle of Torino’s back-three – but also capable of occupying the right or left centre-back roles – Bremer has been a colossus for Ivan Juric’s side.

Just like Rudiger, Bremer boasts lightning pace, is strong, aggressive and competitive, and is superb in the air.

According to InStat, Bremer has the most interceptions in Serie A with 313.

He also has the most ball recoveries in the division by a long way. He has 415 ball recoveries, which is incredibly 63 more than the next highest in Italy – Jose Palomino of Atalanta.

Even more astonishing is that, ahead of the most recent matchday, Bremer has the most ball recoveries in the opposition half in Serie A. Considering the fact he is a defender, this is remarkable and it illustrates just how good Bremer is at pressing high up the pitch and stealing the ball from the opposition. This is a trait that is perfect for aggressive teams with a high defensive line, something Thomas Tuchel often exhibits at Chelsea.

His competitive nature means he has challenged for more balls than anyone in Italy, and he is third in Serie A for aerial challenges won.

Naturally, Bremer is a threat in the opposition box and he has scored three goals this season in Serie A, in addition to five last term. This includes a memorable goal against Inter.

Bremer has also gained a reputation for shutting down Serie A’s best strikers this season. He completely cancelled out Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic during the Turin derby in February, as well as Inter’s Lautaro Martinez and Milan’s Olivier Giroud last month. He was man-of-the-match in all these games.

Will Chelsea sign Bremer?

But in order to sign Bremer, Chelsea will have to move fast.

Inter have been in talks with Torino for several weeks now and it is understood have already agreed personal terms with the defender. Juventus and a number of other Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, have also been linked.

Bremer is expected to leave this summer, though, for what would be a bargain fee of around €35-40 million. His contract expires in 2024 and Bremer wants to join a big club in order to get a call-up for Brazil at the World Cup later this year.

A move to Chelsea alongside Brazil legend Thiago Silva certainly wouldn’t do his chances any harm.
