The Spanish champions and Champions League finalists will have €200m to splash on transfer fees alone – with their budget now substantially freed up.

Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is the favourite to be Madrid’s next big signing and is valued at around €80m.

But Madrid will also make a big signing in attack, with AC Milan’s Scudetto star Rafael Leao on their shortlist as a main alternative to Mbappe. The Serie A Player of the Year could cost northwards of €120m.

Benfica revelation Darwin Nunez, who was one of the breakout stars of the season, is also on Madrid’s shortlist.

Mbappe had seemed destined to join Real Madrid this summer but completed a dramatic turnaround by penning a three-year extension with PSG last Saturday evening.

All season long, it had been unanimously accepted that he would sign for Madrid on a Bosman transfer.

Having rejected a €200 million bid from Real Madrid for Mbappe last summer, the Frenchman was believed to have already agreed a free transfer move to the club he supported as a child.

This was reinforced by the fact that he rejected numerous offers of a PSG extension throughout the campaign.

But, in a shock twist, Mbappe decided to sign a new deal at PSG.

Mbappe’s annual salary is reported to be between €40-60 million net, with the consensus being in the middle at €50m per year.

What did Real Madrid offer Mbappe?

Madrid were also set to pay Mbappe a substantial salary.

He had reportedly agreed a five-year contract worth €25m per year net before he changed his mind.

The attacker also was said to have agreed a signing-on bonus with Madrid of over €100m.

With at least €225m freed up from the Mbappe signing, Madrid will now be spending elsewhere.
