Madrid are looking to sign a top forward this summer – in addition to Kylian Mbappe - and are mulling over making a move for Ronaldo having almost given up on primary target Erling Haaland.

Haaland is edging closer to signing for Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund, with the consensus in Spain that Madrid have as good as ended their interest in the Norwegian.

Subsequently, Madrid have begun looking at other options and believe that Ronaldo would potentially fit the bill for next season.

The 37-year-old scored a record-breaking 451 goals for the club during a glorious nine-year spell there from 2009 to 2018.

Despite his age, he has shown he has not lost his goalscoring touch having found the back of the net 23 times this season for Man Utd.

Ronaldo is considering leaving United just one year after returning there as he wishes to continue playing in the Champions League.

The Red Devils are almost certain to miss out on Europe’s premier club competition as they could be eight points off the top four by the end of this weekend.

And incoming Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag could push Ronaldo even closer to Madrid.

According to the Mirror, Ten Hag (pictured below) does not see Ronaldo as a key player and has no intention of starting him regularly given his age.

Instead, the current Ajax coach wants to build his Man Utd team based on ‘high energy and youth’.

Ronaldo’s playing time will therefore be managed if he stays at Old Trafford.

This is something that won’t go down well with Ronaldo, who is notorious for wanting to play virtually every minute of every match.

Ronaldo would be interested in returning to Madrid, who are slowly returning to the top of European football.

They won their 35th La Liga title on Saturday and are in the Champions League semi-finals against Man City.

They are also coached by Ronaldo’s former Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.
