Bayern adamant Robert Lewandowski won’t join Barcelona
Bayern Munich are adamant that Robert Lewandowski will see out the final year of his contract and will not join Barcelona.
Barcelona have made Lewandowski their number one target for the summer transfer window and they have been in talks to sign the former Borussia Dortmund star since March.
Lewandowski, whose contract at Bayern expires in 2023, is keen to make the move to Camp Nou as he would like one final challenge at a bit club before the end of his career.
Indeed, Lewandowski has made a number of recent public declarations stating that he sees his time at Bayern as over and demanding for the club to let him leave.
This has led to an ugly war of words developing between Lewandowski and Bayern officials.
On Wednesday, Lewandowski told reporters that “no other offers were even considered by me other than that of Barcelona. I want to leave Bayern, that's clear."
What did Bayern Munich say?
Bayern Munich’s senior management have immediately responded to these words and insist that Lewandowski is staying.
“Our position is clear: Robert has a contract until the summer of 2023”, sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic told Bild.
“New bid from Barcelona? I'm not thinking about that. I'm expecting to see Robert in training at Säbener Straße on July 12.”
CEO Oliver Kahn added: “As far as Lewandowski is concerned, not much has changed. He's still under contract until 2023.
“Here at Bayern we are now looking forward to the first day of training with Robert.”
Barcelona are set to table a new and improved €50 million offer for Robert Lewandowski, according to reports in Germany.
The Blaugrana will up their offer, having had a €32m bid completely ignored by Bayern Munich last month and a €40m offer snubbed last week.
It has been a busy few days for Bayern as on Wednesday they announced the €41m signing of Sadio Mane from Liverpool.
FootballTransfers also understands that they are closing in on the signing of Stuttgart striker Sasa Kaladjzic, which adds to the feeling that Lewandowski will indeed leave.
