Official: Arsenal sign €3.5m Marquinhos
Arsenal have confirmed they have signed Marquinhos from Sao Paulo on a deal thought to be worth €3.5 million (£3m).
The Gunners have confirmed that the 19-year-old has signed what is described as a "long-term contract" with the club.
He is a forward player who typically plays out wide. He made 33 appearances for the Brazilian side and has represented Brazil at Under-16 and Under-17 level.
Technical director Edu told Arsenal's official website: “We’re delighted to have completed the transfer with Sao Paulo, as Marquinhos was a player we had been watching for a while. At 19, he is still very young, so he is a player for the future. We look forward to Marquinhos now joining us for pre-season, making his new home, and continuing to grow and develop with us.”
Marquinhos is Arsenal's second arrival of the 2022 summer transfer window following the addition of New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner, who is expected to be a back-up option for Aaron Ramsdale.
What next for Arsenal in the transfer window?
Although Arsenal had a busy summer 2021, they are expected to be very active again this time around.
In particular, Edu and Arteta will be looking for reinforcements in attack. Alexandre Lacazette has been allowed to leave while talks continue over a new contract for Eddie Nketiah, who will otherwise leave on a free transfer if these breakdown. That would leave the Gunners without a recognised centre-forward given that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was effectively allowed to depart to Barcelona in January.
Furthermore, at least one central midfielder is being targeted as a priority, with Matteo Guendouzi's switch to Marseille inevitable. Several players are being targeted in this area, including Wolves' Ruben Neves and Lazio's Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
Arsenal do not, however, appear on the verge of finalising any more transfers imminently.
