Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi for a club-record fee of €20 million (£17.2m).

Awoniyi has signed a five-year contract with the club, which will keep him at the City Ground until 2027.

He becomes Forest’s first big-name addition since they won promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs, arriving from Germany having netted 15 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches for Union last term.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League and having spoken to Steve Cooper about our ambitions and looking at Forest, with its great history, it’s a club that I want to be part of,” he told Forest’s official website.

Meanwhile, Forest manager Steve Cooper says his side won a fierce battle to secure the striker.

“There’s been a lot of interest in Taiwo from other Premier League clubs, and other clubs across Europe, so we’re delighted that he’s chosen Nottingham Forest,” he said.

“Our recruitment and coaching teams have been monitoring his progress closely over the last few months. He’s a player who we really believe in and we look forward to him going on to fulfil his potential and become a top Premier League striker with Nottingham Forest.”

What will Liverpool earn from Awoniyi transfer?

Awoniyi was previously on the books of Liverpool but was unable to play for the Anfield club upon signing in 2015 as he was not granted a work permit. As a result, he moved from club to club on loan before being sold in the summer of 2021 – just weeks after finally getting permission to finally feature for the Reds.

Liverpool sold him to Union for a relatively modest fee that also included a sell-on clause of 10%. They will benefit from that now and are set to land around €1.5m from the deal that sees Awoniyi move to Nottingham Forest.
