Manchester United could back away from a deal for Harry Kane after reports that Tottenham could demand a significant transfer fee all in one payment for their star man.

United have identified Kane as their top target this summer as Erik ten Hag searches for a new number nine, with the 29-year-old approaching the final year of his contract.

Kane has yet to indicate that he would be willing to extend his deal with Spurs after they were knocked out of the Champions League to leave them without a trophy for a 15th successive year.

With the club also 20 points off rivals Arsenal at the top of the table and manager Antonio Conte set to depart in the summer, Kane could push for a move away from Tottenham.

However, the England captain is keen to remain in England as he draws closer to the all-time Premier League goals record, leaving Tottenham’s options for a sale limited if they do wish to cash in.

The Times reports that Tottenham would only consider a sale if they received £100 million up front in one payment, a figure which could put United off as they look to continue a rebuild under Ten Hag.

Tottenham ‘quietly confident’ of keeping Kane

United are hoping to sign a midfielder and defender in addition to a striker this summer, meaning that spending the majority of their budget in one payment for Kane could limit any further deals.

The club accept that it will take £100m to begin negotiations with Spurs but they are unwilling to be drawn into lengthy and complicated negotiations for Kane.

Spurs are thought to be ‘quietly confident’ that Kane will be at the club next season and they will try to persuade him to sign a new deal if it becomes possible during the campaign, with reports that he is ‘open’ to talks.

Tottenham may look to start the season with Kane and potentially reassess the situation in January when he has six months left on his deal.

United, meanwhile, have the likes of Victor Osimhen and Goncalo Ramos on their shortlists as alternatives to Kane, with Ten Hag not likely to wait around if Kane is not available.
