It had felt inevitable for some time, but Erling Haaland’s record-breaking 35th Premier League goal of the season in Manchester City’s 3-0 win over West Ham was no less momentous.

The terrifyingly clinical Norwegian drew level with Andy Cole and Alan Shearer’s previous record of 34 goals in a Premier League campaign during Sunday’s 2-1 victory at Fulham – but second-half strike against the Hammers on Wednesday night saw him make yet more history in a Man City shirt.

Haaland has now found the net 51 times in all competitions this term, the most by an English top-flight player since Pongo Waring of Aston Villa way back in 1930/31.

And, with Man City having at least eight games still to play in 2022/23, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Haaland could do the unthinkable and break Everton Dixie Dean’s all-time record of 65 goals in a season – which has stood for 95 years.

As the Premier League’s runaway Golden Boot leader scored his magic 35th goal in the competition, Twitter seemed somewhat lost for words – but there was still plenty of typically humorous reaction to this latest milestone doing the rounds.
