Manchester United have told Mason Greenwood the chances of his return to the club next summer when his loan spell at Getafe expires.

Greenwood joined the La Liga side during the summer after United concluded their investigation into the criminal charges he was facing last year, which have since been dropped.

United announced that Greenwood would look to continue his career away from Old Trafford, having not played a game since January 2022 following his arrest by police.

NEWS: Erik Ten Hag 'expected' to have Greenwood available

The 22-year-old was initially earmarked by United for a return to the first team after an internal investigation by the club but these plans were shelved following a negative reaction to the speculation and Greenwood was eventually told to leave the club.

However, with his contract due to expire in 2025, United had never explicitly stated what the plans were for Greenwood upon his return from loan, with the club focusing on the immediate steps to continue his career rather than the long-term path.

But The Express state that Greenwood has now been told that there is no way back for him at United no matter how well he performs at Getafe, with the club making it clear that, while they support him in getting his career back on track, it will not be happening at Old Trafford.

Greenwood wanted by Spanish sides as United reluctantly look to move on

Greenwood has scored once and grabbed one assist in five games for Getafe, two of which have been starts, having been revered by fans after his deadline day loan move which saw the Spanish club sell a record number of shirts with his name on it.

The English striker is believed to be open to a permanent move to Getafe, while more La Liga teams such as Sevilla are thought to be interested in signing him next summer.

DESIRES: Greenwood wants permanent move

United’s refusal to sever ties with Greenwood and their support for him in their initial statement led to some fans fearing the forward would eventually be welcomed back to the club, particularly due to how highly he was rated prior to his arrest.

But United have reportedly put in a ‘series of steps’ in order for him to get his career going elsewhere, having seemingly gauged the reaction and the potential storm that could head their way if they did try to reintegrate him to the first team.
