Hojlund best, Onana worst: Ranking Man Utd’s summer signings so far

Despite the uncertainty over Manchester United’s ownership situation, it was another big summer of spending at Old Trafford.

Over €200 million was splashed out on new players as Erik ten Hag attempted to turn United into a squad of title challengers.

Into the second week of October, and Man Utd’s 2023-24 season has proved to be a disaster.

And most of the new signings have got off to a very slow start.

It is still early days but we rank and grade United’s 2023 summer signings so far.

Andre Onana: E

Many experts believed that Manchester United had got themselves a bargain signing Andre Onana for €55m from Inter Milan.

After all, Onana had been the best goalkeeper in the Champions League last season and was widely recognised as the best keeper in the world with his feet.

However, his first couple of months at United have been a total disaster. He has conceded 19 goals in 11 games and has made a string of terrible mistakes.

These include a shocking fumble over his line to concede the opener from Leroy Sane against Bayern Munich, plus a terrible pass that caused Casemiro to get sent off versus Galatasaray.

Mason Mount: C-

Manchester United beat Liverpool to the signing of Chelsea favourite Mason Mount for a fee that will reach €65m.

However, so far Mount has had a difficult start to life at Old Trafford.

Many experts were already concerned that Mount would struggle to co-exist in the same team as Bruno Fernandes given the two players are similar tactically.

That has proven to be the case and Mount has no goals and just one assist in his first six games.

Sofyan Amrabat: C-

Perhaps it is unfair to give Amrabat a grade given he has only played four matches for Man Utd so far.

But what is for sure is it has not been a pleasant welcome for the Moroccan at Old Trafford so far.

He was injured when he arrived on a €10m loan with option to make permanent from Fiorentina. Then he was hung out to dry by Ten Hag, who ridiculously played him as a left back in the defeats to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray. Unsurprisingly, he struggled badly, being at fault for two goals versus the Turkish team.

One of Europe’s best central midfielders last season, he hasn’t been used properly yet at Man Utd.

Rasmus Hojlund: B-

With many rivals spending big on attackers in the 2023 summer transfer window, Man Utd got into the action by splashing out an incredible €85m on Danish wonderkid Rasmus Hojlund.

Hojlund has had a mixed start to his Man Utd career. In the Premier League he has struggled at times, scoring no goals and creating none.

But in the Champions League he has been very impressive, despite Man Utd losing both matches, scoring three goals in total versus Bayern Munich and Galatsaray.

Hojlund is clearly a hugely talented young striker and he has shown enough promise in his early days to suggest he will be a success in time.

NO GRADES

There are no grades given for Jonny Evans, Sergio Reguillon and backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir (0 minutes of football) as they have not featured enough.

Evans arrived on a free transfer as an emergency backup amidst a defensive injury crisis, Reguillon as a backup to Luke Shaw at left back, while Bayindir signed as Onana’s reserve for €5m from Fenerbahce.
