Man Utd have made the Everton defender their top defensive target for the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have already had a bid for £43 million rejected for the 21-year-old.

Everton are demanding a fee of £70m, which United consider excessive.

United are expected to return with a new bid - albeit still well short of Everton’s valuation - and Romano says that Branthwaite want to move to Old Trafford.

What did Romano say?

“This upcoming week, Manchester United internally will discuss again about what they want to do with Jarrad Branthwaite,” Romano explained

“The player keeps waiting for Manchester United. He keeps believing that Manchester United is a fantastic option for his future, so he wants to go to Manchester United.”

“But it also depends on Everton, and we have to see if Everton will change the conditions of the deal, because for £70 million, United are not going for Branthwaite. So, it has to be something different in terms of package, and we will see what happens.”

There have been reports in the last hours that Everton may be forced to sell Branthwaite before the start of July, which is on Monday.

The Athletic reports that Everton need to meet their PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) requirements by the end of June in order to not be penalised by the Premier League.

According to PSR rules Everton cannot lose more than £105m across a three-year period.

Everton are struggling to raise enough money through sales before July comes along on Monday and so could be forced to finally accept Man Utd’s offer by the end of the week.

United are also working on signing a new striker this summer, with talks currently ongoing with Joshua Zirkzee of Bologna.

Zirkzee would prefer to move to AC Milan but the Rossoneri are refusing to pay the €15m commission requested by the player’s agent Kia Joorabchian.
