The Dutchman will continue on as the head coach despite a poor Premier League campaign in which the club slumped to their worst-ever finish. Talks were held with several managers to replace him, but ultimately the Red Devils decided to keep Ten Hag in the dugout and even offer fresh terms.

The Mirror reports that the club will be able to spend just £50 million in the summer, plus whatever is raised via player sales. It’s a minuscule sum by comparison and it’s thought to be one of the reasons talks broke down the the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi.

Both coaches are out of work but did speak to Man Utd over possibly taking over as head coach ahead of the new season. But The Times reported that both coaches turned down the job, citing issues around how much financial freedom they would get in the transfer window.

Club chiefs including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe spoke to multiple candidates to replace the Dutchman, but eventually decided to stick with the coach. Sells are likely to include the likes of Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood, which would free up wages considerably.

Other members of the side such as Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek, whom have 12 months left on their contract, are also likely to be moved on.

The Everton defender has been deep in talks with the Red Devils over the past year and has verbally agreed terms with the Old Trafford club.

Though it’s been reported that there are issues with the fee, we are told that it’s merely a matter of sorting out the add-ons and clauses and there is confidence a move will be concluded before July.

Man Utd have marked Branthwaite as their top target to bolster their backline and it’s thought that a deal will be concluded by June 30, the final day of the financial year for the Premier League, with clubs having to submit their accounts.
