Man Utd endured a largely dismal 2023-24 season as they performed well below expectations for much of the campaign.

The Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League, were knocked out of the Champions League and Europe in the groups, but did at least claim the FA Cup against rivals Man City.

Manager Erik ten Hag could be sacked, but there are a number of high-profile players who probably need to move on in order to kick-start careers that have fallen away at Old Trafford.

We pick five such players. We have not included players who are already departing on a free transfer, such as Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial.

Marcus Rashford

Rashford’s future at United has been increasingly called into question in recent months after an up-and-down 2023-24 season for the winger.

Rashford’s relationship with Erik ten Hag has been reported to not be perfect by some sections of the media, while his actions off the pitch have been highlighted.

Many feel Rashford needs a fresh start and a new challenge away from Man Utd and possibly away from England, altogether.

These calls have grown louder after Rashford was left out of England’s squad for Euro 2024.

Mason Greenwood

Greenwood is certain to leave Manchester United this summer.

He joined Getafe on loan last summer after Manchester United concluded their investigation into the criminal charges he was facing last year, which have since been dropped.

There is no chance that United will be able to keep Greenwood at the club this coming season due to the public sentiment around the player.

It will also be best for Greenwood to continue his career outside of England where he will have less scrutiny.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho joined Dortmund on loan during the January transfer market as he he returned to the club that he left in 2021.

The English winger rediscovered some of his best form for Dortmund, a far cry from the dismal performances he showed at Old Trafford.

This illustrated that it is best for both Sancho and Man Utd that he leave Old Trafford permanently, whether that be at Dortmund or elsewhere.

Sancho initially joined Man Utd from Dortmund for €85 million in the summer of 2021. But the move simply hasn’t worked out - and it is time to accept that and move on.

Antony

Antony has endured a horrific couple of seasons at Manchester United since joining from Ajax for up to €100m, and has become something of a figure of fun among fans and the media.

He bagged just four Premier League goals in his inaugural season and looked well short of the physical, mental and even technical levels required to play for such a big team.

This past season, Antony was even worse with just one Premier League goal and one assist.

It is clear that Antony is not of the quality needed to play for Man Utd and he must leave the club to play for a team more on his level.

Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen is expected to leave Manchester United this summer and FootballTransfers understands that the Denmark international will push to depart if a suitable offer arrives.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder barely featured during the 2023-24 campaign, with Erik ten Hag opting for other options in the middle of the park, and he needs a transfer to save his club career at 32 years old.
