Thomas Tuchel rejected the chance to be Manchester United manager as he felt he would argue with the club over transfers.

That is according to Bild, who report that Tuchel held discussions with United chiefs this past summer to replace Erik ten Hag.

It has been well documented that United spoke to many coaches about replacing Ten Hag at the end of last season before eventually confirming the Dutchman to continue in his job.

The top target to replace Ten Hag during this review was Tuchel.

The German held talks with United chiefs but decided against taking the job because he felt he would have disagreements over the transfer market.

This has been a problem that Tuchel has faced in his previous jobs at Bayern Munich, Chelsea and PSG.

Consequently, Tuchel held out and eventually accepted the offer to become the new England national team manager.

Tuchel accepts England job

Tuchel has agreed a deal to become the next permanent England manager from January 2025, with the appointment made official last week.

Interim England boss Lee Carsley will now return to England’s U21 side.

Tuchel becomes the first German ever to manage the England national team on a contract until the World Cup in 2026.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror and others report that Ten Hag has until the next international break in November to avoid the sack.

If Ten Hag has not improved fortunes by then, Ten Hag is finally expected to be sacked.

Ten Hag survived this latest international break and the much-anticipated executive summit held in London by United chiefs.

The United board held a six-hour meeting at INEOS’ offices in London where it was decided that no action would be taken to sack Ten Hag.

The meeting was chaired by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Ineos owner and United’s largest single minority shareholder. Also present were Ineos head of sport, Sir Dave Brailsford, United CEO Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, the sporting director, and technical director Jason Wilcox.

Tuchel felt that he would have problems with these staff members over transfers, and thus declined the chance to take over at Man Utd.
