Neymar has made a major announcement about his future at Santos that contradicts what his father said just hours earlier.

The Brazil icon returned to his homeland in January following an ill-fated spell with Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.

Transfer speculation that swirled around the player for months even before he completed the move has only continued as Neymar only signed a short-term deal with Santos.

Rumours that he could leave for MLS or make a return to European football, particularly Barcelona, have persisted and the 33-year-old has refused to shoot these down just after his father had indicated that he could remain with Santos for the long term.

“Although the contract only lasts five months, our project will not be limited to this period, we did not come here to then leave five months later,” Neymar Sr had said.

Neymar hints at quick transfer

The player does not seem to be of the same opinion, hinting that he is already thinking about moving away, despite netting his first goal against Agua Santa – his first strike since 3 October, 2023.

“The contract we made, we did it thinking of each other. One helps the other,” Neymar said. “Santos helps me, they opened doors for me to rediscover football. I didn't want to sign a long contract because I didn't know how I was going to come back, how I was going to feel. Anything can happen...

“Santos knows the love I have for this club, the respect I have for it. As long as I'm on the pitch, and that's what I love, I'll give 100%. We're going to enjoy this moment, every game. It's the beginning of a great era for Santos, I'm sure of it. Santos will get back up and get back to the top, where they deserve to be.”

Barcelona are the side most closely linked with Neymar as the Catalan press have reported they will not shut the door to the possibility of the player returning.
