Szoboszlai should be a Bayern target, says Matthaus
Lothar Matthaus believes Bayern Munich should sign Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Salzburg, with the former Bayern legend describing him as a “gem” of a player.
Szoboszlai made 18 starts for RB Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga last season, scoring a nine goals and recording an impressive 10 assists.
He has started the new season in fine form, too, having contributed to six goals in six starts through one scored himself and five assists.
Stat | 2019/20 | 2020/21 |
---|---|---|
Appearances | 27 | 7 |
Goals | 9 | 1 |
Assists | 10 | 5 |
Shots P90 | 3.5 | 2.0 |
Big Chances Created | 12 | 4 |
Dribbles P90 | 1.3 | 1.6 |
Final Third Passes P90 | 22.8 | 23.4 |
His performances have seen him continually linked with a move away from the Austrian side, with a switch from Red Bull side to another in RB Leipzig the likeliest scenario.
However, Matthaus hopes Bayern can trump their Bundesliga rivals to the signing of the Hungarian wonderkid.
“Szoboszlai is a gem,” Matthaus said in an interview with Munchner Abendzeitung.
“He could move to RB Leipzig in January, but I’m convinced that every top club in Europe has him on their list, including FC Bayern.”
The 20-year-old has also been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal leading the race in England for his signature.
Will Szoboszlai move in January?
Szoboszlai’s agent, Esterhazy Matyas, has admitted that a move is on the horizon.
“We’re seeing that every time he has a good game, which fortunately is happening quite often, the rumours are getting stronger,” Matyas told Digisport.
“However, our strategy isn’t going to change because of one or two games,
“We have belief in our own plans and the vision we had originally is only getting stronger because all of the comments we are reading only prove that we are on the right path.
“Whether it’s in January or next summer, the most important thing is that he goes to a club where he will have a good chance of playing regularly and continuing the learning curve he started in Salzburg – that’s the most important thing for us.
“Obviously, it’s no secret that Dominik is closer now to leaving the Austrian league.”
