The 21-year-old signed for Chelsea in September for a reported fee of £71m (€77m), becoming the most expensive German player of all time.

After a second consecutive excellent season with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, domestic giants Bayern Munich were also interested in capturing his signature. But the opportunity to work with Lampard was a huge factor in his decision to move to West London.

  • “I was always impressed with his scoring threat,” Havertz told Sport Bild.

“I found that outstanding for a midfielder. That’s what I want to measure myself against. The fact that he was so successful and at the same time so personable impresses me.”

The German also points out that unlike Champions League winners Bayern, Chelsea are a
club undergoing a rebuild in order to compete for silverware.

“It was important to me to have a club with a vision,’ said Havertz.

“An exciting change is taking place. We are a young team with many great players. We think
offensively. We want to build something up here and attack. That motivates me a lot. And then a title
with Chelsea is worth a lot more.’

Havertz is currently self-isolating following his positive test for coronavirus but should return
in time to face Newcastle at St. James’ Park in 10 days time.
