Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that Jose Mourinho once campaigned for the head coach role at the German giants, only for the club to turn him down.

Mourinho is one of the most successful managers in the world and has spent time with various elite clubs; Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham.

Though he has found success harder to come by in more recent years, he still holds a high reputation and is currently with Roma in Serie A.

Mourinho is noted for having won the title in Portugal, England, Spain and Italy.

Germany was also a desired destination, according to Rummenigge, who admits that, while he respects Mourinho, the club ultimately decided to go in another direction.

“A few years ago, Mourinho wanted to come to Germany to work at Bayern, but we felt he wasn’t the right man for the club," he told RAI Sport.

“Personally, he always made a good impression on me. I hope that he can find success at Roma, because he needs to win on a daily basis.”

In his career so far, Mourinho has won eight league titles and two Champions League titles.

What is Mourinho doing now?

In April of 2021, the Portuguese coach was sacked as manager of Tottenham with the club struggling in the Premier League. It was the first time since 2002 that Mourinho left a club without winning a trophy.

It did not take him long to get back into coaching, however, as the next month in May he was announced as the new boss at Roma for the 2021/22 season.

It has been a tenure of contrasting fortunes so far, as although Roma may be within three points of the Champions League qualification positions, they have only won half of their games in Serie A.

The Italian capital side have played 12 matches, winning six of those, drawing one and losing the other five.

On the European stage, Roma are looking good to qualify for the knockout stage of the Europa Conference.

But, there has been troubling performances in the group stages, namely a shocking 6-1 defeat away at Norwegian side FK Bodø/Glimt.
