Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has told Erling Haaland to reject Bayern Munich and sign for Real Madrid instead.

Haaland is arguably the hottest young property in Europe after an incredible 18 months at Dortmund.

Dortmund resisted all interest in Haaland this past summer but it is widely expected that the attacker will move on at the end of the campaign when a release clause will be activated in his contract.

Virtually every top club in Europe is interested in signing the 21-year-old, including Manchester City, Manchester United, Barcelona and, particularly, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

But Matthaus believes that Haaland would be making a mistake joining Bayern because he can’t see the Norwegian succeeding in the same team as Robert Lewandowski.

What did Matthaus say about Haaland?

“Haaland may end up at Bayern after Lewandowski. But not alongside him,” said Matthaus, who played for Bayern in the 1990s.

“Haaland would fit in better at Real Madrid with Kylian Mbappe.”

Mbappe seems almost certain to join Real Madrid at the end of the season when his contract at PSG expires.

The young France attacker has shown no interest in renewing his deal at the Parc des Princes and was also close to moving to Madrid this summer.

Were Mbappe and Haaland to both join Real Madrid, it would create a quite mouth-watering attack – with the Blancos also possessing the likes of Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr.

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke recently admitted that Haaland was “seduced” by Real Madrid.

“It has not yet been decided whether he will actually leave next summer. We’ll see,” Watzke told reporters.

“He is an independent personality. Anyway, at some point he will play in one of the best clubs in the world, although he is already playing in one of the best clubs in the world. But I know, of course, that Real Madrid seduces him.”

“The ball is in Erling’s court.”

Haaland has scored 70 goals in 69 games since joining Dortmund in January 2020.
