Barcelona presidential candidate Toni Freixa has promised an investment of €250 million and three new signings at the club next season if he is elected.

Freixa is just one of a number of candidates running to become Barcelona’s next president – with the election set to be held in March.

The main topic of debate among the candidates is how the club can get out of the current financial woes it is currently experiencing and rebuild a team capable of challenging for major trophies in Spain and in Europe.

And, according to Freixa, the club could be set to receive a quarter of a billion Euros in a few months time to help get Ronald Koeman’s team back to the top.

“We have closed an agreement with an investor who will contribute €250 million for Barca,” the former lawyer told Spanish newspaper Marca

“For the 2021-22 season, we will be able to sign three stars, two in attack and one in defence.

“We have talked about the possibility of securing the signings for next season. Barça will have the competitive team that it has to have and that now it does not have.

“Everything will be a consequence of work. It is impossible that Koeman does not like them, they are unique players.”

It remains to be seen which three players Freixa is referring to, but the main player of interest that has been consistently linked with the Catalan club has been Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland

Although it’s highly unlikely that Barcelona’s current financial situation would allow the club to sign the Norwegian striker in the summer, there’s no doubt that €250 million of fresh investment would undoubtedly allow the club to make an enticing offer for the Bundesliga star.

However, this isn’t the first time a presidential candidate has promised the moon in an attempt to entice club members to vote for him.

Current frontrunner for the election, Joan Laporta, has promised to keep Lionel Messi at the club while suggesting that signing players like Haaland would be perfectly possible once he takes over the club.

Such bravado has forced the other frontrunner, Victor Font, to push back on such ambitions and has labelled his opponent’s suggestions as “irresponsible” and entirely unrealistic.

He said: “Generating expectations about some of the stars who have dazzled us this week and the Champions League stars is irresponsible because it is not possible to sign them.”
