Why Man United could switch targets from Jadon Sancho to Kingsley Coman
Manchester United have been pursuing Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho for some time now, but perhaps Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman may prove to be a more obtainable target.
The Premier League giants have been heavily linked with Sancho since their failed attempts to sign the England international last summer.
And while Coman was briefly linked with a move to Old Trafford, Bayern never seemed in serious risk of losing their 24-year-old talent.
However, while Sancho may end up being available at a certain price this summer, Coman’s situation at Bayern may not be as rock solid as previously thought and the French winger may now be turning his head in favour of a move to England.
According to a recent report from BILD, Bayern are desperate to sign three key players down to long-term contracts: Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich and Coman.
The German newspaper believes that Goretzka has all but signed an extension to his current deal, which expires in 2022. While Kimmich, who has a contract until 2023, has plans to meet with the club’s management team to discuss plans going forward before he commits to a longer contract.
However, in the case of Coman things seem to be a little more complicated. Although the winger has a deal with Bayern until 2023, BILD believes the French talent has been far less forthcoming with his future plans.
Indeed, the player’s father (and agent) is set to meet with Bayern about a new deal but nothing has been agreed at all and apparently the player has been considering his options after Manchester City offered to swap Leroy Sane for Coman’s talents in the summer, while Man United reportedly promised to pay the forward €8 million per year if he ever made the move to Old Trafford.
This, naturally, could offer Man United more options in the summer transfer window. Aside from Sancho, whose own contract expires in 2023 and may be for sale if Dortmund need to make up some financial windfalls, there now seems to be the possibility that Bayern will by then know if Coman has any intentions of spending his long-term future at the Munich club.
If not, the Old Trafford side may find a more willing seller in Bayern this summer than they did in Dortmund last year. And, in turn, Coman could one day find himself making the move to Manchester before too long.
